It’s the same problem every year. I’ve waited until last minute to book my trip and now A) It will be very expensive or B) There is no availability for the flight/resort/tour that I wanted.

With airlines consolidating and cutting flights another 2% next year on top of record capacity numbers there is less flight availability than ever. If you wait until last minute, your airfare cost WILL be considerably higher than booking well in advance. That is not to say that you absolutely cannot find value flights out there. It just means that if you do decide to take the gamble, you have to be prepared to accept the consequence of higher prices and worse seating.

The other aspect that you have to take into account in your planning time is that many people are returning to leisure travel after taking time off due to the recession. While there are low seasons in which resorts have plenty of space, it still pays to plan well in advance for 2 reasons. First, if you lock in the room category you want well in advance you do not run the risk of having to choose from what’s leftover for those last minute bookings. Second, if you lock in a rate and a special comes available later down the road many resorts will honor the lower pricing even though you are already booked.

If you don’t have any interest in getting the flights you would like, and the room category you prefer, for a better price then by all means feel free to wait until the last minute. Jamaican Holiday Traditions

Markets all over the island are set up with vendor stalls selling small toys, balloons, and a huge range of delicious sweets, including pinda (an African word for peanut) cakes, grater cakes and peppermint sticks. Traditionally on Christmas Eve, some markets are decorated with streamers, balloons and large accordion-style bells. Local residents dress up in colorful costumes, including bright hats purchased at the Grand Market. Jonkonnu is a traditional Christmas celebration in which revelers parade through the streets dressed in dazzling masquerade, continuing a custom brought over from Africa by slaves who were transplanted to Jamaica. Strawberry Hill Hotel reopens in Jamaica

Strawberry Hill Hotel & Spa, 3,100 feet above sea level in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains, reopened after a six-week closure for a property upgrade.

Accommodations in the 12 cottages feature antique furnishings, including mahogany desks and four-poster beds. Facilities at Strawberry Hill include a spa, hiking trails, gardens, a coffee farm and birdwatching sites. On a clear day, the view from the infinity pool offers a 40-mile vista that takes in Kingston and the surrounding mountains.

The resort reopened with a new menu that incorporates classic Jamaican cuisine and new musical playlists for the public areas compiled by musicican Bruno Guez. IPods with preloaded playlists are available for guests during their stay.

Rates through Dec. 19 start at $235 per room, double. Guests who book three nights receive one de-stress spa treament per person.

Update on Beautiful Bangkok, Thailand

As you all know, Bangkok, Thailand's Capitol and largest city, have been inundated with rising water levels and flooding from Chao Phraya River. In the days and weeks ahead, we'll publish regular updates on the status of this beautiful city. Bangkok, we're always thinking of you!!

Bangkok

In central Bangkok, businesses, hotels, shops and tourist attractions remain open as normal. These areas include:

Khao San Road, Ratchaprasong (Central World area), Phetchaburi Road, Sathorn, Ploenchit/ Chidlom, Siam Square/ MBK/ Siam Paragon, Pratunam, Silom/ Surawongse, Rama 1 Road, Sukhumvit Road/ The Emporium, Rama 4 Road, Yaowarat (Chinatown).

Areas flooded in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area are mainly in the suburbs in the east and west, the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, and districts in the northern part of the city.

Transportation:

The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are operating as normal schedule. Taxis and tuk tuks are available as per usual. Many BMTA bus routes have been rerouted or suspended due to the flooding. Express boat services on the Chao Phraya River have also been suspended, as have most water-related tourist activities.

Airports:

Bangkok is served by two airports. Suvarnabhumi Airport, the main gateway to Thailand with 120 international and domestic airlines, remains open. It has considerable flood protection measures in place. Suvarnabhumi Airport is also the main connector for international arrivals to domestic flights serving tourist destinations throughout Thailand such as Phuket, Chiang Mai and Surat Thani. Domestic flights are operating as per normal between Suvarnabhumi Airport and other airports in Thailand.

There is no reports of delay or cancellation on any connecting flights to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Transportation to and from the airport into central Bangkok including taxis, buses and the Airport Rail Link have not been affected by the floods and are operating as usual. Highways from the airport to tourist destinations southeast of Bangkok such as Pattaya, Rayong and Ko Chang are open.

State Railway of Thailand and inter-provincial bus services:

Train services to northeastern Thailand are operating as per normal. Train services to the northern provinces are operating between Hua Lamphong station in central Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Trains to the north are being rerouted around flooded areas, adding approximately two hours of travel time. Train services to the southern provinces are operating from Hua Lamphong station or Nakhon Pathom if required due to flooding in Bangkok's western suburbs. The SRT is providing shuttle bus services between Hua Lamphong station and Nakhon Pathom when needed. Travelers are advised to check in advance with these operators and may want to consider flying to their destinations within Thailand.

Other destinations of Thailand such as Hua Hin, Cha Am, Phuket, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Chiangrai, Sukhothai, Lampang have not had any flooding and all tours and packages are operating as normal.

The town and historical park of Ayuthaya remain flooded and no tours are operating, however the flood water is receding.

In 2007, I made my first visit to Bangkok Thailand. It was my first time as a buyer at the Thailand Travel Mart which was hosted by the Thai Tourism Office in Bangkok. I had the opportunity to participate in several pre-tours (most of which were themed) to some of the key point of interests around the city.

I returned in 2008 and again, I found myself on these wonderful pre-tours which I found truly insightful; I really got to learn about the city, its customs, traditions, its people and way of life. Bangkok is a colorful and vibrant city - but I was always curious about how it transformed during the night.

At the end of my pre tour that year in 2008, I thought about my experiences. Mind you, I had the time to visit the malls, walk the streets by day, but I really wanted to see Bangkok from a different perspective. I wanted to see how the city transformed at night - the vibrancy of the city, its heartbeat, what the locals did after an arduous day of work. But most important, what the city looked like from the top of the Banyan tree Bangkok or Lebua at the State Tower.

At the end of my pre-tours, I asked my local tour operator if it was possible to create a tour that lets me see and experience the town in a different way and also at night. He gladly obliged and coordinated everything for the following evening. I expected to be picked up by a private car and taken on a private night tour of the city. Yes!! I was picked up by a private car that whisked me........ to the airport - for a very big surprise. Now, driving to the airport (unsuspecting), I said to myself, "Chris, this is not what I had in mind!" This is totally different alright but totally not what I had in mind.

Needless to say, I was taken by surprise when I was told that there was a helicopter waiting for me. I will admit that this was a total surprise!! I had the best experience of my life seeing Bangkok from the sky - every inch of it. Seeing Lebua, the Bayoke Tower, the Palace at night; It was so different. After that wonderful experience, we concluded the night with dinner at the Sirocco which is located on the 63rd floor of that very same hotel I dreamt about - Lebua at State Tower.

The following evening, we saw the town the way the locals experience it. We dined at a local 4-Star restaurant, made new friends on the streets, and experienced a local club where the young professionals frequented.

This was the beginning of our Luxury at Night Experience.

Crystal Cruises’ first year of its “You Care, We Care” voluntourism program has added eight more excursions to wrap up 2011. Domus Christi—Dubrovnik, Croatia (Sept 29): Garden with elderly inhabitants of this 660 year-old shelter before accompanying them on a stroll along the Old Port.

Inbound tourism to Japan recovering more quickly than expected

On March 11, 2011, the world woke up to discover the double natural catastrophe that hit the Tohoku region, on the west coast of Japan. A few hours later, the report of a nuclear incident at Fukushima Daichi, broadcasted live on international channels, just seemed to confirm the worst case scenario could be happening.

As a consequence and understandably, the vast majority of international travels to Japan were immediately cancelled. This resulted in an overall drop of 72% in international arrivals for March 2011 compared to previous year. The following months – April & May – weren’t much better. All over Japan, hotels, Ryokans and other businesses involved in tourism suffered consequent losses and expressed concerns over being able to continue operating if international travellers, in fears of disruptions in services or concerns over safety due to nuclear radiations, kept on avoiding the country for a longer period of time.

The reality of the situation on the ground was very different than reported in the media: apart from the north-eastern part of the country, the rest of the country - although shocked - remained safe and open for business as usual. However, due to intensive media focus only on the hardest-hit regions, Japan was a no-go destination in everyone’s mind.

Six months later, thanks to the joined efforts of government organizations, private operators and international travel agencies, business is coming back. Starting with few enquiries for very short trips (3-5 nights) in July and August, the trend is picking-up speed in September, with requests coming from the US, Latin America and Europe. Surprisingly, most travellers book at short notice, wanting to visit Japan in October and November, in time for the Autumn leaves season. Trips for Cherry Blossom cancelled in 2010 are also coming back to the books and we expect April 2012 to be at the same levels as it was supposed to be in 2011.

Of course, the full recovery of regions devastated by the tsunami and around Fukushima nuclear plant, will take many more years, but the recovery of tourism in the rest of Japan is a very encouraging sign for everyone in the country and especially for us, in the travel industry.

Recently, a wonderful new client of ours posted several questions about booking a Sandals vacation package for 2013. We thought the questions were well worth sharing with those of you who might be planning your Sandals Vacation for 2012 or even 2013:

I would like to book a vacation for 2013 for my husband and I for our 15th wedding anniversary and I have some questions:

Can I book that far in advance and if so will airfare be included?

You can secure the land portion of your vacation well in advance. However, you can only secure the air-portion of the package 330 prior to the actual travel dates as flights are only published 330 days in advance. Some carriers, such as Jet Blue and Southwest are even less.

Sandals advertised 60% off discounts with 1 night free, would you all be able to book for those prices?

Typically, most advertised discounts have travel restrictions and travel expiration dates so there is a likelihood that you may not qualified for the immediate discounts. More imporantly, Sandals Resorts typically offer great year-round discounts that averages between 50% to 65% off the published hotel rates. So it is likely that you will receive substantial savings at time of booking. On a side note; if you did not pay for your package in full {at time of booking}, we can always request an adjustment to your package price that will reflect the current promotion/s being offered. However, this can be done one time only.

In Jamaica we were thinking about Ocho Rios, or maybe Negril, which is better?

Ocho Rios and Negril are both very popular resort areas. Negril is more laid back and attracts visitors who simply want to relax and do nothing. Ocho Rios, by the way, is the total opposite. It is vibrant – active with much to see and do. It is perfect for those who prefer to go out and explore. I recently wrote a blog article about this and I will enclose it below this paragraph. What does the all-inclusive package include, exactly?

Your all-inclusive Package Will feature:

• Round trip airport transfers

• All meals and snacks

• Use of non-motorized water sports

• All taxes and gratuities

Sometimes there might be a nominal fee for a round of golf or scuba diving for example.

Do we have to book any activities ahead of time, including the spa?

Not necessarily. You may choose to book your activities at time of arrival. If you know what you’d like to do, I would recommend booking in advance to assure that you get the time and dates you want.

Can we find a villa or something with a private pool, and will we also have access to shared pools?

Absolutely! Sandals Resorts, for example, offers a small collection of private villas in Jamaica and the Bahamas. Most with private pools. They are fully staffed and some even offer an all-inclusive plan. Learn more.....

Would I be able to set up a payment plan to pay for this?

Absolutely. You can secure your vacation with a small investment with final payment due 45 days prior to your travel date. You may also choose to make subsequent payments toward your vacation package.

At 11 a.m., De Derian will share her pampered life and a wealth of anti-aging beauty, health and nutrition secrets, tips and philosophies that she has gathered from ancient cultures and 450 spas around the world. Guests will learn how to make seasonal changes in their exercise routine, diet and appearance to maximize their potential, plus how to turn a bath into an at-home spa sanctuary using herbs and leftover fruits and vegetables for scrubs and facials. De Derian’s interactive mini workshops will bring guests’ goals into focus and build age-defying reserves that will last a lifetime.

Every afternoon at 4 p.m., Robinson will get guests on their feet for some Latin-inspired dance fitness fun. Robinson calls her high-energy, aerobic classes “parties,” as the easy to follow, calorie burning Zumba program features upbeat music and choreography incorporating hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts and some Bollywood and belly dance moves.

There's a fascinating website called "Snopes.com" which keeps track of the origins and truthfulness (or not) about widely circulating tales of urban legend.

In the travel section, Snopes list some urban legends about air travel. Scan the list below then go to the site and find out which are true, false or somewhere in between.

Spotlight: Sandals Royal Caribbean

Throughout my time here at Elite Travel Consulting, I have the opportunity to visit different destinations and resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. My favorite destination is St. Lucia for its beauty and tranquil atmosphere. But if I had to choose my favorite resort that I have had the privilege of going to, I would have to say that my favorite is the Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Sandals Royal Caribbean is close to the hip strip, the nightlife center of Montego Bay. The resort is set on a beautiful property and every amenity you could want. A must try is the Thai Restaurant (1 of 7 restaurants) on the private island, which is outstanding in both experience and portion size. It is a great Thai experience and calls for proper dinner attire. A quick ride on the resort ferry will get you over to the island, which also hosts a private beach and bar.

My last dining experience at the restaurant was followed promptly by a thunderstorm. It began with a sprinkle, which many of you know is common on a daily basis. For those of you that have yet to experience the Caribbean, if it starts to rain… “Wait 5 minutes for the sun”. Unfortunately on this evening those 5 mins were followed by another hour of heavy rain. After the quick ferry ride back my group and I decided that we might as well take advantage of the pool since we were already completely soaked. Surprisingly we found our pool (1 of 6 pools on property) completely empty. Who would have guessed?

The majority of guests use the main pool, which is the center of activites and entertainment of the resort. They host local bands and performing acts, along with fashion shows and games featuring the staff and guests. If there is one thing that sets this property apart from any other it’s the “feel” that the resort gives you, an unmatched Caribbean vibe. A popular weekly show on “Caribbean Night” features a fire dancer. If you have yet to witness a fire limbo contest you are definitely missing out.

Staying at Sandals Royal Caribbean provides you the unique opportunity to visit the other 2 Sandals properties in Montego Bay. You “Stay at 1, Play at 3”. This gives you access to 2 other beaches, 10 other restaurants, 5 other Jacuzzis, and 7 other bars. I would say that there is no shortage of motivation to make Sandals your choice in Montego Bay.

Last but certainly not least is the staff at Sandals Royal Caribbean. From the sales team to the entertainment staff the resort is filled with some of the best in the industry. Whether you have a standard room, or a room that comes with concierge or butler service you can rest assured that you will be very well taken care of. If being on first name basis with the staff is a problem then this might not be the right resort for you.

All in all Sandals Royal Caribbean is a great resort. As an All Inclusive resort you can leave the wallet behind and enjoy your accommodations, food, drinks, and fun all in one convenient package. The variety of restaurants will allow you to sample cuisine of all types. The entertainment will leave you with lasting memories that can only be made here. And last but not least you will meet some one of the best resort staffs out there. It is truly one of the most enjoyable resorts that I have stayed at.

I've had the pleasure of Staying at Sandals Resorts throughout Jamaica. I've come to learn more about their differences and what makes them unique. Today, I would like to share my thoughts about Sandals Resorts in Jamaica, and help you decide which Sandals resort is right for you.

And of course, my favorite - Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort with its warmth and colonial look and feel. Sandals Royal Caribbean is located approximately 10 minutes away from the airport. The beauty of being in the Montego Bay area is that you'll have full access to all three Sandals resorts with complimentary shuttle that runs between all three properties every five or six minutes. You can eat, play, or relax at all three Sandals at no additional cost. This is perfect for those who are on the island for a short period of time and want to take in as much as possible before leaving.

Whitehouse Jamaica - Whitehouse Jamaica is a world in its own. Located approximately one and a half hours due south of Montego Bay, It hugs the southern coastline of Jamaica. I guess you can consider Whitehouse "off the beaten Path" as it remains relatively untouched and undeveloped. Whitehouse is home to Sandals Whitehouse, the perfect place for a total escape. I recommend Sandals Whitehouse for those who want to disassociate themselves from the rest of the world - even if it's for a few days. Whitehouse is the perfect place for total relaxation and overindulgence of delicious French pastries.

Ocho Rios Jamaica - The home of my family!! Ocho Rios is located one and a half hours east of Montego Bay and one and a half hours due north of Kingston - the Capitol of Jamaica. Ocho Rios is the perfect please for the active travelers - those who wish to spend as little time at the resort, and explore all that Jamaica has to offer. There's a plethora of things to do here. Stop at a local stand and sample real Jamaican Jerk pork or chicken; challenge yourself to a climb up the majestic Dunn's river. Go horseback riding, swimming with the dolphins, ride the all-new Jamaica bob sled ride or visit a local village and sustainable community where the grow all the ingredients needed for Jamaican jerk seasonings. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Ocho Rios is home of two spectacular Sandals resorts - Sandals Grande Riviera Resort and the opulent Sandals Royal Plantation - my perennial favorite. Royal Plantation is the perfect luxury boutique escape for those who prefer a more intimate setting. Sandals Royal Plantation offers butler services to all of its guests. For those who seek a more lively atmosphere, we recommend Sandals Grande Riviera Resort. This resort is actually two resorts in one. There is the Riviera Side (Seaside and Beach Club) with the main building which hugs the coastline and behind it (and literally across the street) you'll find the Manor side with its Great House and villas for those who seek a more tranquil setting. Unlike Montego Bay, you do not have full access to either property. You do if you're staying at Sandals Royal Plantation, and you don't if you're staying at Sandals Grande Riviera Resort.
